First Republic Bank engages in the provision of private banking, private business banking, and wealth management. It operates through the Commercial Banking and Wealth Management segments. The Commercial Banking segment gathers deposits, originates and services loans, and invests in investment securities. The Wealth Management segment includes investment management activities of FRIM, money market mutual fund activities and brokerage activities of FRSC, sales of life insurance policies and annuity contracts through FRSC, trust and custody services, and foreign exchange activities. The company was founded by James H. Herbert II in 1985 and is headquartered in San Francisco, CA.

Even if First Republic survives, the brand is permanently damaged going forward. The same clients and growth profile are not coming back.

The bank's balance sheet, when marked to market, leaves a negative value that is larger than equity, calling into question what equityholders would receive in a fire sale.

First Republic may lose a material portion of its deposit and client base, permanently impairing the value of the franchise.

First Republic wasn't the same as Silicon Valley Bank, and not long ago the bank scored better than peers on client satisfaction surveys. This could help the bank survive.

First Republic’s wealth management business would be valuable to any bank, as most banks want to grow out their high net worth clientele and their overall wealth franchises.

First Republic is priced as a distressed asset. If the bank can make it and ever return to anything close to the profitability levels it was previously capable of, there are potentially massive returns to be made.
