The 2014 acquisitions of Solid Concepts, Harvest Technologies, and GrabCAD position Stratasys as one of the largest direct manufacturers serving professional markets.

The 2012 Objet acquisition made Stratasys the largest manufacturer of 3D printing equipment, one of the few offering a full line of products and services to the professional market.

Stratasys lacks a major presence in metal-based printing, the highest-end technology and the one most likely to withstand competitive inroads.

3DP is subject to rapid product life cycles and risks of obsolescence. This raises costs and potentially threatens lucrative annuities from after-market sales of materials and related services.

The expiration of key patents on Stratasys’ FDM technology led to a flood of new entrants, significant price competition, and write-downs. A more recent patent expiry on a competing technology (SLS) could unleash similar forces.
