VF Corp. engages in the business of producing and marketing apparel, footwear, and accessories. It operates through the following segments: Outdoor, Active, Work, and Other. The Outdoor segment includes authentic outdoor-based lifestyle brands such as performance-based and outdoor apparel, footwear, and equipment. The Active segment focuses on activity-based lifestyle brands including active apparel, footwear, backpacks, luggage, and accessories. The Work segment offers work and work-inspired lifestyle brands with product offerings including apparel, footwear, and accessories. The Other segment refers to the sale of non-VF products and sourcing activities related to transition services. The company was founded by John Barbey in October 1899 and headquartered in Denver, CO.

Vans is unlikely to produce growth rates above 20% as in some years before the pandemic. Its performance (both positive and negative) tends to have a large impact on VF's market valuation.

VF is exposed to mass-market retail in the U.S. As such, orders and pricing are often out of its control. Moreover, some of the chains that carry VF gear are closing stores and may even go out of business, requiring distribution changes.

VF paid over $2 billion for Supreme in 2020, but the brand suffered a drop in sales in fiscal 2023. Supreme is an important part of VF's margin expansion plans.

VF is diversified and exposed to active and outdoor, two of the most attractive categories in the apparel and footwear market.

The North Face has been a strong performer even as VF as a whole has struggled. We estimate its operating margin have improved to the high teens from 12% since fiscal 2019.

CEO Bracken Darrell intends to improve results for Vans under the Reinvent strategic plan. We think Vans can be fixed and that it has growth potential given its small share in the global sports-inspired apparel and footwear market, estimated at $164 billion in 2023 (Euromonitor).
