The value of your investments and the income you receive from them can go up and down, and you may get back less than you invest.
The tech-dominant team sheet got a few new names in May’s buy list. AI and crypto were still the leading themes behind the top 10 stock buys last month on Robinhood UK but the mix looks a bit different with Palantir dropping down the ranks, Tempus AI dropping out and Apple sneaking into the party.
NVIDIA still on top after Tesla’s sales drop
Strong Q1 earnings and continued demand for AI chips boosted NVIDIA’s stock through May. The month wasn’t without its challenges though and US export restrictions prompted the company to write down its inventory by $5.5bn. Still, a $40bn deal with Oracle to supply NVIDIA chips for a giant US data centre in Texas, as part of the Stargate AI project, kept investors on board.
Tesla stock picked up at the end of April and powered through May, even with European sales suffering. April marked the fourth consecutive month of declining sales in the region, down by 49% year on year, with EV fans opting for cheaper brands. But, it’s the robotaxi rollout investors are clearly more interested in - the market will be on the lookout for the new Model Y this summer too.

Five investing myths
GLP-1 weight-loss drugs have been one of the biggest themes of the past few years, with the narrative dominated by the likes of Novo Nordisk and Zealand Pharma. However, after surging demand outstripped supply, putting the drugs on the shortage list, it opened up a loophole for other healthcare firms to get producing. That brought HIMS into the mix, with the firm able to pump out discounted Wegovy subscriptions even after the production balance was restored. Impressive quarterly results spurred on investors, with the share price hitting new highs in May.
It was an up-and-down month for MSTR with bitcoin highs supporting the share price, only for valuation concerns to take the shine off the crypto rise. Robinhood UK investors are keeping the faith for now, with Coinbase on the radar too after being included in the S&P 500 index during the month.
Are SMCI’s accounting woes firmly in the past? The market certainly seemed to look past them in May, instead choosing to focus on a $20bn partnership with Datavolt to develop AI infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. Investors will be hoping the rise in share price is enough to spark life back into the stock.
While parts of the market wrestle with Palantir’s valuation, shareholders saw another positive month for one of the most popular stocks of the past year. Increased demand for its AI-powered analytics services and a pause in US-China trade tensions lifted the share price to all-time highs.
It’s been a bumper start to market life for CoreWeave since its March IPO and May saw a big boost in share price and investor interest. The cloud platform provider has capitalised on appetite for AI infrastructure and the market seems to like seeing partnerships with the likes of OpenAI. Is this just nervous energy? We’ll have to see whether earnings eventually back up the price rises or investors might see a more muted performance later in the year.
Apple graduated onto the top 10 buy list in May, even as President Trump threatened to impose a 25% on iPhones manufactured outside the US. With the stock dipping, investors were buoyed by strong Q2 revenues and higher sales of iPads in particular. The announcement of $100bn in share buybacks might also have helped, especially with shares retracing June 2024 levels.
