Options alerts | Robinhood

Options alerts

Options alerts are push notifications to help you track your options positions throughout the day, week, or month.

They can alert you on price fluctuations, upcoming expirations, earnings, dividends, as well as in-the-money and out-of-the-money changes. You’ll also get alerts when the option’s mark price changes, which is also known as the mid-point between the bid and ask price.

Note that if there are no bids, the mark price will show as $0.01

Keep in mind, you won’t be notified about every price movement. You’ll only get an alert when your contract meets adjustable thresholds (as described in this section).

Keep in mind

While you may find these notifications helpful, they shouldn’t be the only way you keep track of your positions. Remember, your options alerts may be disrupted by a variety of market conditions including trading or exchange halts and data outages among other things.

How to customise options alerts

You can customise your options notifications by following these steps in the app:

  1. Go to Account (person icon) → Menu (3 bars)
  2. Select Notifications and messages
  3. Select Push notifications

Strike price alerts

These notifications serve as reminders for when an option goes in and out of the money.

Option in-the-money (ITM)

You’ll receive this notification when your out-of-the-money contract has moved at least 1% in-the-money. You won’t receive it more than once per week and only when the contract is expiring in a month.

Option out-of-the-money (OTM)

You’ll receive this notification when your contract was previously in-the-money and has moved at least 1% out-of-the-money. You won’t receive it more than once per week and only when the contract is expiring in a month.

Price movements

These notifications let you know when an option goes up or down beyond a certain threshold.

Option up today

You’ll receive this notification when your contract’s mark price is up more than 20%, at least one day after opening it. You can also adjust these thresholds to 50% or 100% in Account (person icon) → Menu (3 bars) → Notifications and messagesPush notifications.

Option down today

You’ll receive this notification when your contract’s mark price is down more than 20%, at least one day after opening it. You can also adjust these thresholds to 50% or 100% in Account (person icon) → Menu (3 bars) → Notifications and messagesPush notifications.

Gain and loss threshold

These notifications serve as reminders for when a single leg contract or a leg of a multi-leg strategy exceeds certain preset thresholds.

Total return up on option

You’ll receive this notification no more than once a week, when your position’s total gain has exceeded 20%. You can also adjust these thresholds to 50%, 75%, or 100% in Account (person icon) → Menu (3 bars) → Notifications and messagesPush notifications.

Total return down on option

You’ll receive this notification no more than once a week, when your position’s total loss has exceeded 20%. You can also adjust these thresholds to 50%, 75%, or 100% in Account (person icon) → Menu (3 bars) → Notifications and messagesPush notifications.

Upcoming dividend updates

These notifications provide important updates on an upcoming dividend for a long call and early assignment risk for a short call.

Early assignment risk (short call)

You’ll receive this notification when there’s an upcoming dividend announcement and you hold a short call that could be facing early assignment risk.

Upcoming dividend on option (long call)

You’ll receive this notification when there’s an upcoming dividend announcement on a long call that you hold.

Options expiration reminders

These notifications serve as reminders for when a single contract or a leg of a multi-leg strategy is about to expire. You’ll get a notification 1 month and 1 week before, and then again on the day that your position expires.

Disclosures

Note that options alerts may be disrupted by a variety of market conditions including, but not limited to heightened market volatility, trading or exchange halts, and data outages. We may not send option alerts for options with wide bid-ask spreads.

Options trading entails significant risk and is not appropriate for all customers. Customers must read and understand the Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options before engaging in any options trading strategies. Options transactions are often complex and may involve the potential of losing the entire investment in a relatively short period of time. Certain complex options strategies carry additional risk, including the potential for losses that may exceed the original investment amount.
