GDS Holdings Ltd. engages in developing and operating data centers in China. It builds, operates, and transfers data centers at other locations. Its data centers are carrier and cloud-neutral, which enable customers to connect to major telecommunications carriers, and to access a number of cloud service providers. The firm also offers colocation and managed services, which include direct private connection to major public cloud platforms. The company was founded by William Wei Huang in 2001 and is headquartered in Pudong, China.

A Chinese property downturn could leave GDS exposed given it owns around two thirds of its developed and developable capacity of over one million sqm.

GDS needs its biggest customers more than they need it, and its highly concentrated customer base (in terms of revenue exposure) leaves the company at their mercy.

GDS' data centers are not significantly differentiated from those that others, including its biggest customers, could supply. 

As an early entrant into the data center business in China GDS has built up expertise and a reputation that should allow it to remain competitive in the data center construction and operations.

5G, industrial internet, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other innovations that increase the demand for data and connectivity leave us in the early stage of a data center renaissance.
