Signature Bank engages in the provision of commercial banking services. It operates through the Commercial Banking and Specialty Finance segments. The Commercial Banking segment consists of commercial real estate lending, commercial and industrial lending, and commercial deposit gathering activities. The Specialty Finance segment consists of financing and leasing products. The company was founded by John Tamberlane, Scott Aaron Shay, and Joseph J. DePaolo in September 2000 and is headquartered in New York, NY.

At over $600 million in deposits per branch, roughly twice the levels of its closest peer, the bank is among the most efficient in the U.S. at inbounding deposits. 

The bank’s relationship model, based on a single point of contact, cannot structurally be duplicated by larger money center banks, and the complexity of the New York multifamily market reduces competition.

Much of the significant improvement in the bank’s efficiency ratio since 2007’s 63.7% to the sub-35% ratio today has been driven by its focus on the New York multifamily market versus internal cost-cutting efforts. 

Key individuals, such as George Klett, the chairman of the commercial real estate committee, could take many important relationships with them if they leave the bank. 

The bank has consistently increased deposit share for about 15 years, but it only has about 2% of the New York market, suggesting many years of future share gains.

Taxi medallion values (about 3% of the loan portfolio) have been hurt by Uber’s rise in New York and Chicago. The bank is seeing higher levels of losses and has had to rework the portfolio.
