It operates through the following segments: Electricity, Product and Energy Storage. The Electricity segment focuses on the sale of electricity from the company's power plants pursuant to power purchase agreements. The Product segment involves the manufacture, including design and development, of turbines and power units for the supply of electrical energy and in the associated construction of power plants utilizing the power units manufactured by the company to supply energy from geothermal fields and other alternative energy sources. The Energy Storage segment consists of battery energy storage systems as a service and management of curtailable customer loads under contracts with U.S. retail energy providers and directly with large commercial and industrial customers. The company was founded in 1965 and is headquartered in Reno, NV.

Operations outside the U.S. subject Ormat to extra political risk, and the U.S. isn't without its risks around renewable policy, despite repeated renewals of the production tax credit.

Exploration risk is a concern. High capital costs for exploration and the potential for failure are serious issues with attracting capital and competing with other generation sources.

Geothermal plants tend to be built in remote locations, which makes transmission expensive and damps demand for electricity generated from the technology.

Ormat can use the flexibility of the renewable tax credit system to help fund investment and has been able to issue favorable corporate debt as well.

The company has deep experience in the industry and is a market leader, with the most efficient and widely utilized plant design.

Ormat has good growth potential in the U.S. states that have both renewable energy portfolio requirements and geothermal potential. A new U.S. presidential administration could provide additional growth opportunities.
