Crypto investment limits in Canada
To help keep the crypto market safe and sustainable, Canadian regulators (the CSA and CIRO) have established "Net Purchase Limits" for certain cryptocurrencies. These limits apply to most crypto platforms operating in Canada, including Robinhood.
A Net Purchase Limit is the maximum amount of restricted crypto you can buy over a rolling 12-month period, minus the amount you sell.
Not all coins are subject to these limits. Currently, the following "unrestricted" assets do not count toward your limit:
All other crypto available on the platform are considered Restricted Assets and are subject to the annual limit.
Your specific limit depends on your province of residence and your investor classification, which is determined by the information you provided during your account application.
| Province | Basic investor | Retail investor | Eligible investor | Accredited investor |
| BC, AB, MB, QC | $5,000 CAD | No limit | No limit | No limit |
| All other Provinces/Territories | $5,000 CAD | $30,000 CAD | $100,000 CAD | No limit |
You can check your remaining limit at any time in the app:
If you try to place an order that exceeds your remaining limit, the app will notify you before you swipe to trade.
No. It is a rolling 12-month limit. This means your remaining amount is calculated based on your activity over the last 365 days. If you bought $1,000 of a restricted coin today, that $1,000 will be available in your limit exactly one year from now.
Yes. Because it is a Net Purchase limit, selling a restricted asset adds that amount back to your available limit for the current 12-month period.
Price appreciation does not affect your limit. We only look at the Canadian dollar value of the trade at the moment it was executed. If you buy $10,000 of a coin and it grows to $50,000, you have still only used $10,000 of your limit.
Cryptocurrency trading is offered through Robinhood Canada. These limits are mandated by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and are subject to change based on regulatory updates. All investments involve risk.
