Things to consider when investing

At Robinhood, we want to make sure you are investing wisely and responsibly, especially when you’re dealing with personal challenges. We want you to invest only when it is right for you, as there may be circumstances where it may not be a good time for you to invest. Informed and responsible investing can help mitigate it negatively affecting your lifestyle. The following are some tips to consider when investing.

  • Managing stress and emotions: Making decisions about money under stress or pressure is difficult, so take care not to make impulsive decisions. These might not help your long-term goals, so make sure you are informed and get the support you need.
  • Gambling: If you are investing to pay off a debt or looking for quick gains to offset losses, we recommend you take a break from investing and seek appropriate help. You can also let us know if you want our help managing your behavior through the app.
  • Cash reserves: Before investing, make sure you have a safety net to cover your (and any dependents’) needs in the case of an emergency. If you have debt, you should also consider paying this first before starting to invest.
  • Embracing patience: Seeing your investments drop in value can be stressful. But patience is key with long-term investing. Consider your long-term goals. If you wish to change your assets, make sure to do your research and take the time to consider your options.
  • Taking risk: If the risks of investing are affecting you, for example making you stressed or anxious, consider whether investing is right for you. Think about what your goals are, how much risk you are willing to take, and most importantly, how much you can afford to take. To learn more about risk, review Risk management and our Risk Disclosures Summary.
