Buy or sell crypto

Crypto trading on Bitstamp UK (via the Robinhood app) allows you to buy and sell digital assets directly within your app. Crypto services are provided through an in-app integration with Bitstamp UK Ltd (BSUK), an FCA-registered entity owned by Robinhood.

Keep in mind

Before you can place your first crypto order, you must complete a series of regulatory steps, including an investor categorisation, a knowledge assessment, and a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period. Review Trading crypto on Robinhood via Bitstamp for details.

Placing a crypto order

You can buy or sell supported crypto across our mobile app (iOS and Android) and on the web.

How to buy or sell:

  1. Go to the asset’s detail page in the Crypto tab or using the in-app Search tool
  2. Select Trade → Select Buy or Sell
  3. Choose whether you want to enter your order amount in cash (e.g., in USD) or as a specific asset quantity (e.g., fractional or whole coins)
  4. Review your order details, including the zero-fee breakdown → Review order
  5. Swipe or click to confirm and submit your order

Order types and volatility collars

Bitstamp UK exclusively supports Market orders. Advanced order types, such as limit orders, stop orders, or recurring investments, are currently unavailable.

Because crypto assets can experience sudden price volatility, your market orders are executed as collared limit orders to protect you from unexpected price spikes or sharp drops:

  • Buy orders: Executed with a +1% collar calculated above the current ask price.
  • Sell orders: Executed with a +5% collar calculated below the current bid price.

Trading fees

Bitstamp UK features zero trading fees across all available crypto assets.

  • There are no hidden spread-based fees or volume-tiered fee structures applied to your execution.
  • Your order confirmation screens and transaction history will explicitly display a £0.00 / $0.00 fee line.

Currency handling and buying power

All crypto order entry, charting, and execution take place strictly in US Dollars (USD). Your crypto account utilizes your existing Robinhood UK brokerage cash balance.

Shared buying power

Your total crypto buying power is shown as a single number in USD. If you hold British Pounds (GBP) in your brokerage account, the app automatically translates that balance into USD and combines it so you know exactly how much purchasing power you have.

Automatic currency conversion

If you have enough overall cash to place a trade but your funds are currently sitting in GBP, you don’t need to manually exchange currencies ahead of time. When you submit your order, a Quick-Convert screen will appear instantly. This allows you to quickly convert your GBP to USD right inside the trade flow to fulfill your transaction.

Currency switcher

While order books and technical charts remain denominated in USD, you can toggle the standard currency switcher $(GBP↔USD)$ on your Invest or Crypto tabs. This allows you to view your total crypto portfolio value, asset equity, and daily returns in your local currency.

Limitations

Please note the following features are not supported on Bitstamp UK at this time:

  • Crypto transfers: You cannot deposit external crypto into your account, or withdraw your crypto holdings to external self-hosted or third-party blockchain wallets.
  • Crypto staking: Yield generation for digital assets is not available.
  • Margin trading: Crypto trading must be funded entirely by cash. You cannot use margin to purchase crypto, and your crypto positions cannot be used as collateral for equity margin.
