Everything You Need to Know About Interviewing at Robinhood

If you’re considering a role at Robinhood, you already know: being here is being part of something big.

We’re known for our bold mission to democratize finance for all, and have been expanding access to the financial markets since day one.

The builders here are the best at what they do. Rather than hiring armies of people, we’ve built a small, elite team that operates more like a special forces unit. This curious, driven group solves problems that have a huge impact on expanding access to the markets. So when we hire, we do it with precision.

Here’s a look at how we interview to build this high performing team.

Why Candidates Choose Robinhood

We’re fortunate to have a mission that resonates, a product people love, and a community that holds us to a high standard. There’s a special energy that comes from working on something that matters to people’s lives (and their money). We have the kind of product customers talk about at the dinner table.

From the inside, it’s a fast-moving, high-impact environment. It isn’t for everyone, but it’s perfect for those who find energy in solving complex, large-scale challenges. Our mission shows up in our work every day, whether we’re building new products, improving experiences, or tackling new technical hurdles.

And an employee favorite: each other! This is a high-performing team but Robinhoodies keep their egos in check and choose the best solution over the loudest voice. We value ownership, speed, debate, and collaboration, offering top talent a chance to reshape how the world thinks about financial technology.

What the Process Looks Like

Some departments may have additional steps. For example:

  • Engineering: system design discussions, coding exercises, or real-world scenarios that reflect the kinds of challenges they would encounter on the job.

  • Product: case studies that explore decision-making and prioritization.

  • Design: portfolios presentations to walk through UX thinking.

AI in Interviews: Expectations and Best Practices

We aim to be on the cutting edge of AI, not just among finance companies, but among leading technology companies. That shows up across everything we do, including hiring.

What this means for interviewing:

  • Working with AI every day is a baseline expectation of every role at Robinhood - technical or not. We value candidates who are AI-fluent: people who understand how tools can enhance productivity, who think critically about when and how to use them, and who are curious about how AI is evolving.

  • We ask that you not use AI tools during live interviews or assessments unless we say otherwise. This includes smart glasses, earbuds, AI notetakers, large language models (like ChatGPT or similar), chat assistants, screen overlays, and any other tools that provide real-time guidance or generate responses on your behalf. We want to hear your unfiltered ideas and problem-solving process. Relying on AI can make a conversation feel scripted, and we’re more interested in your genuine perspective.

  • BTW, you might see our AI note-taker, BrightHire, in our call. We use these so we can stop scribbling and start listening so you have our full attention throughout the interview.

How to Show Up

Our interviews reflect how we work: collaborative, thoughtful, and grounded in real-world problem solving. Prep for your interview is less about rehearsing perfect answers and more about showing how you think, make an impact, and approach challenges.

Common Pitfalls (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Staying too high-level: General answers make it hard to understand your impact. Focus on specifics—what you did, why you did it, and the results you achieved.

  • Over-rehearsing: Prep is important, but authenticity matters more. Aim for a real conversation, not a perfectly scripted response.

  • Lack of engagement: Interviews go both ways. Asking thoughtful questions and showing curiosity helps you stand out, not just for what you know, but for how you think.

What Happens After the Interview

Your recruiter is your point of contact for updates and next steps. Timelines vary, but we aim to move fast while maintaining a high bar.

If you move forward, you’ll enter the offer and onboarding process, which may include background checks, fingerprinting (for certain roles), and pre-onboarding steps.

If it’s not the right fit, we encourage candidates to stay connected:

One more thing… it’s important you know Robinhood has a high performance culture. This means we operate with extreme urgency and we are driven by impact. We are a collaborative, intensely driven team operating at a very high bar. That means Robinhood is not for everyone. The pace is demanding and our goals are ambitious. If this resonates with you, bring that energy to the interview. You’ve got this! We look forward to meeting you soon.
