Smart Income

Smart Income is a set of income-focused portfolios under Robinhood Strategies, designed for those who want their extra funds to work harder, without taking on the risk of being fully invested in the stock market.

This is currently rolling out, which means it's not available to everyone just yet.

Who is it for?

Smart Income may be a fit if you:

  • Have uninvested cash sitting in a savings account or sweep that is not needed right away, and want better yields.
  • Are frustrated with falling interest rates in most savings accounts but aren't ready to fully invest in stocks.
  • Already have an aggressive portfolio and want a more stable, income-focused counterweight.

Key features

  • Monthly payouts: Your portfolio will generate income on a monthly basis.
  • No lock-up: Move money in or out at any time with no penalties. All security sales settle in 1 business day.
  • Separate from other Robinhood Strategies portfolios: You can have both a Smart Income portfolio and a more broadly invested Robinhood Strategies managed account
  • Managed by experts: Rebalancing, the impact of Fed rate decisions, and maintenance are handled by the Robinhood Strategies investment team.

How it works

When you open a Smart Income account (currently only available for individual accounts), you simply select the time horizon applicable for the funds going to your portfolio. The team handles everything else, including selecting investments, rebalancing, and making decisions on your behalf to provide income relative to your time horizon.

You can choose from the following time horizons that are matched to a different portfolio and yield.

  • Less than 1 year: Invests primarily in short-term US Treasuries and high quality bonds for reliable income with minimal price fluctuation. Designed to keep your money accessible while targeting a competitive yield.
  • 1–3 years: Invests in a mix of US Treasuries and a variety of bond types, aiming to boost income while keeping price swings relatively low. May also include a small amount of income oriented equity. Takes a balanced approach for medium-term savings that prioritizes diversity in sources of yield.
  • More than 3 years: Invests in short-term US Treasuries with a broader mix of income-generating investments, including equity, such as dividend stocks and other income generating equity strategies, and a variety of bond ETFs. The portfolio offers more income potential over time, in exchange for more short term price movement and is best suited for medium to long-term time horizons.

The following example shows a portfolio and yield estimate for a 1-3 year time horizon. Note that this is an illustration and does not reflect the current yield of any actual portfolio:
