National Day of Mourning

Historically, when a President of the United States passes away, the federal government declares a National Day of Mourning (NDOM) to mourn their death. The NDOM is typically the day of their funeral, which may cause government, bank, and market closures.

For the NDOM on January 9, the US stock markets are closed and some US banks may also be closed.

While the stock and options markets are closed, here’s what you can and can’t do:

  • Trades: You can’t trade stocks, ETFs, or options during the NDOM closure. However, any prior trades will still settle even when the markets are closed.
  • Options: You can't trade options during the closure, but they can expire, be exercised, and assigned as usual. Options that expire during NDOM can be traded on the previous trading day before the market closes. This is also when we’ll run our standard risk checks. Be sure to monitor your positions, as they’ll be exercised or assigned using the previous trading day’s closing prices. Check out Expiration, exercise, and assignment to learn more.
  • Crypto: You can continue to trade crypto.
