Internal assets transfer | Robinhood

Internal assets transfer

You can transfer assets between Robinhood accounts that you own, including your individual investing account, joint investing account, and spending account. Some limitations apply, including that you cannot transfer non-cash assets between IRAs or from IRAs to taxable accounts.

Individual and joint investing account transfers

You can initiate the following types of internal asset transfers between your individual and joint investing accounts:

Keep in mind

*The account receiving the margin debt must first have margin enabled. And if an account has a pattern day trading (PDT) flag, it must maintain a $25,000 account value to continue day trading.

To initiate an internal assets transfer between your investing accounts:

  1. Select Account (person icon)
  2. In the app, select Menu (3 bars) or if on web classic, skip to the next step
  3. Select TransfersMove assets within Robinhood
  4. Select the account to transfer from and to
  5. Select what assets to transfer
  6. Follow the online prompts to review and submit

After you submit a transfer, you can view the status in AccountHistory. Keep in mind, any stocks or ETFs included in a pending transfer cannot be traded until the transfer is complete. Most transfers complete within minutes. However, any transfers initiated after 8 PM ET are processed the next business day.

Individual investing and spending account transfers

To transfer settled funds between your individual investing and spending accounts:

  1. Select the account you want to transfer from
  2. In the app, select Menu (3 bars) → Transfer money or on web classic, select Transfer
  3. Enter the amount to transfer
  4. Select the account to transfer to
  5. Review and complete the transfer

Transfer limitations

You currently cannot complete an internal asset transfer with the following:

  • Assets to accounts that you don’t own
  • Assets included in a pending ACH deposit or ACATS transfer
  • Options transfers between accounts
  • Transfer Robinhood crypto account assets
  • Transfer Robinhood IRAs or inherited retirement account assets
  • Transfer Instant Deposits, you’ll need to wait the 5 business days for the initial transfer to be available before initiating a transfer out
  • Transfer assets that would cause a margin call
  • Transfer sanctioned stocks or halted or locked securities

Tax considerations

When transferring assets to a joint investing account with an unmarried co-owner, it may have tax implications and may also result in a change of ownership of 50% of the assets.

A change in ownership of the shared assets may affect the cost basis used to determine taxable gains or losses. For more details, check out How does married status with joint accounts affect cost basis?

Keep in mind

Robinhood doesn’t provide tax advice. For questions about your specific tax situation, consult a tax professional.

Bonus eligibility

If you recently got a bonus or cash reward for an ACATS transfer into your investing account from an outside brokerage, then you’ll need to keep the eligible account balance to keep the bonus. If an internal asset transfer reduces your account balance, it may affect your bonus eligibility and may cause a bonus removal charge.

For more details, refer to the terms and conditions for the specific bonus or reward program you participated in.

Stock Lending

You can transfer stocks that are on loan. The interest for the days a stock was on loan will be paid to the originating account at the end of the 30-day period. If Stock Lending is enabled in the receiving account, stocks will be eligible for lending the following day.

Cash sweep program

You can transfer cash that’s earning interest with the brokerage cash sweep program. After the cash is transferred, the originating account will stop earning sweep interest, and the receiving account will start earning it, provided that account has enabled cash sweep.
