Authorized users
An authorized user is an additional cardholder that you can add to your account. Authorized users will have access to your available credit and be able to make transactions. They’ll receive their own physical card with a separate card number from your Gold Card, and you can customize accounts based on their relationship type.
These are the 4 different authorized user relationship types:
Each individual authorized user account can be further customized to make sure that you’re sharing account information and setting spending limits that you’re comfortable with as well as limiting access where needed.
Adding authorized users to your account can help manage your family’s spending as you can set individual authorized user spending limits and monitor all spending in the app. The Family tab in the app contains helpful analytics about who is spending what each month and how they’re contributing to your overall spend and credit utilization. Being an authorized user can also help boost your family’s financial wellness as authorized users can be reported to the credit bureaus monthly.
You can only have 7 active authorized users on your account at this time and 12 total authorized user accounts, including both those that are active and deactivated.
To add an authorized user to your account, go to Family → Add cardholder. Next, select the relationship type you’d like associated with their account, their account access level, and what features you’d like enabled. Once this information is confirmed, you can share the invitation to join your account. Your authorized user will need to download the Credit app (if app access is enabled) and can begin spending using their virtual card until their physical card arrives.
You’ll need to provide the authorized user’s full name and shipping address. If you’re choosing to add app access, your authorized user needs to have an email address and US-based cell phone number. If you want to enable credit reporting for your authorized user, you’ll need to know your authorized user’s full social security number along with their home of record so that their information can be verified with the credit bureaus. As the primary account holder, you’ll be prompted to enter this information when initially adding authorized users. There are no fees for adding authorized users to your account.
For each relationship type, you can choose if you want your authorized user to have access to the app and its features. If they have app access, you can choose if they’ll have limited or full access. These access levels determine what information relating to your account the authorized user will be able to see in the app. Keep in mind, child accounts will always have limited access.
Full access authorized users will see the app just as you do —they’ll see your transactions along with the transactions of other authorized users. They can also add their own bank accounts and make payments on the overall account balance from their app. This option should only be chosen for someone you’re comfortable sharing your full account details with.
Limited access authorized users will only be able to view transactions and information pertaining to their specific account. They won’t be able to see anything specific related to the primary account holder's spending other than the current account balance and available credit. Limited access authorized users also can’t add bank accounts or make payments in their app.
The adult relationship types, Parent and Other, come with the option to customize the following settings:
The Partner relationship type has slightly different options:
Only 1 Partner authorized user account is available per primary account.
Child accounts are always limited access and come with the standard authorized user features: monthly and single transaction limits, credit reporting, and app access.
Additionally, you can enable child safety mode which declines transactions from types of merchants that aren’t suitable for children. These merchant categories include: gambling and casinos, liquor stores, bars and nightclubs, and dating and escort services. While this relationship type is intended for children under 18, you can use this relationship type with someone who is over 18 as well.
No, even if you add an authorized user and give them full access to make payments, they aren’t responsible for making on-time payments. You, as the primary account holder, will always be responsible for making your minimum payment by your payment due date to keep the account current. Your authorized user can make payments if you enable this permission, but the responsibility to remain current remains with you.
You can update any of your previously chosen authorized user settings at any time in your app. You can also lock, replace a card, or close an authorized user’s account. Go to Family → Select View on the profile of the authorized user whose account you’d like to update. You’ll see the option to update your authorized user’s monthly and transaction limit (depending on their relationship type). If you select All “your authorized user’s name’s” Settings you can lock or replace their physical card, change their access level, enable app access and credit reporting, or close the authorized user’s account.
Authorized users won’t be able to change any of the feature settings within their account, but they can lock and replace their card and update their contact information without your assistance if they have app access. All authorized users can close their account without your permission.
For any authorized user account without app access, the primary account holder will need to lock and replace the authorized user’s card and update the authorized user’s contact information within their app. Primary account holders will also be able to lock and replace all authorized user’s cards regardless of app access.
Transaction and monthly spending limits set limits on different types of authorized user spending. Transaction limits can be placed on the amount of a single transaction that an authorized user attempts to complete. If a transaction higher than this limit is attempted, it will be declined.
Monthly spending limits refer to the total amount a cardholder may spend in a month. If an authorized user attempts a transaction that is over their monthly spending limit, that transaction and all following transaction attempts will decline until the authorized user’s spending limit refreshes at the beginning of the following month.
Both of these settings can be updated by the primary account holder at any time by going to the authorized user’s account in the Family tab of the app.
All Partner authorized user accounts won’t have access to monthly spending limits.
First, confirm that the person that you’re trying to add as an authorized user isn’t a primary holder of a Robinhood Gold Credit Card. If the person you’re trying to add as an authorized user already has their own Robinhood Gold Credit Card account, you can’t add them to your account as we only allow 1 account role per person at this time.
If the person you’re trying to add isn’t already a Robinhood Gold Credit Card cardholder, log out of the app and make sure you have the latest version of the app downloaded before trying to log back in again. If you’re still having trouble, you may have hit the authorized user account limit (7 active accounts and 12 total accounts). If you haven’t hit this limit, you can contact our Credit Card support team for help.
In addition to your account being reported to the credit bureaus in your name each month, your account information will also be reported to the credit bureaus under your authorized user’s name. The information that is reported under your authorized user’s name will be exactly the same as what is reported under your name. It will contain the overall account credit utilization and all payments that were made by both you and your authorized user. This feature is available to assist your authorized user in building credit by being reported.
Note that as the primary account holder, you’ll still be responsible for making on-time payments of at least your minimum amount due each month for your account to remain current.
No, only primary account holders will be able to integrate their accounts with compatible budgeting apps. This feature isn’t available for authorized users. Review Get started for more information about how budgeting app integration works.
