Using advanced charts

Advanced charts expand on basic chart capabilities to bring powerful technical analysis tools—such as technical indicator data and customized intervals per time span—to traders who want to analyze deeper and act quickly.

Before you begin

Check out Using charts to learn more about basic charts. For information on how to use charts in Legend on the web, check out Charts in Robinhood Legend.

In the app

The following describes our mobile advanced chart experience that’s currently only available for stocks and ETFs. Advanced charts for crypto and futures in the app more closely resemble the web experience for advanced charts.

To access advanced charts in the app

  1. Search for a stock or ETF
  2. Within the chart, select Advanced

Navigation

Zoom, pan, and scrub with touch gestures to modify the chart view:

  • Pinch to zoom in and out of the chart
  • Swipe left and right to pan earlier and later in time
  • Long press in the chart to scrub and view more detailed data for a selected point in time
  • Drag the y-axis up and down to scale the price axis values. Double-tap to return to an auto-scaled y-axis.

From the chart, you can also tap on the current chart symbol in the search field and search for a different symbol whose chart you wish to view.

Options chain

You can select the options chain icon to view the options chain for an equity:

If this option isn’t available, you may not have access to options trading.

Technical indicators

You can select the technical indicator icon to view, add, remove, or customize indicators on the chart:

  • Swipe through a list of commonly used indicators or select + Add to view the full list. Search then tap on a technical indicator to add it to the chart (you can add up to 10).
  • After you’ve added an indicator, it will appear in the list and you can tap the indicator again to hide it.
  • You can also select Settings (gear icon) on a technical indicator to customize the indicator settings or to remove it from the chart.

Select Save as set to save the currently added indicators as a group and apply the same set of indicators to other advanced charts. Any sets created will automatically sync with Robinhood Legend and vice versa–any sets created on Robinhood Legend will also be available on mobile.

Check out Chart indicators on Legend to see the full list of indicators supported in the app for stock and ETFs.

Chart settings

You can customize the advanced chart to your preferences with the various settings found in Chart settings (3 dots):

  • Show or hide all indicators, drawings, open orders, and open positions
  • Change the chart type
  • Adjust trading settings (auto-send, session, and time in force)
  • Add visual markers for the symbol and indicators
  • Adjust y-axis scaling
  • Adjust extended hours data settings

Trading in the chart

You can enter trades quickly from the chart in a few different ways:

  • For a market order, select Buy or Sell MKT
  • For a limit or stop order, long press on the chart to start scrubbing, and tap the + icon on the price axis to enter limit or stop orders
  • To cancel an open order, select the X next to the open order to cancel it
  • To modify an open order, press and drag the order to modify it. If open orders aren’t shown in an advanced chart, confirm that open orders are enabled in chart settings
  • Auto-send to trade and skip the confirmation screen, you can set up auto-send in chart settings

The following shows an example of how you can place a limit order from the chart and drag to edit it.

Note

Enabling auto-send allows you to place trades faster by skipping order confirmation screens. It may increase the chance of accidental trades—so make sure it’s the right fit for your trading style before turning it on. Review Auto-send to learn more about the risks and details about enabling and using auto-send.

On the web

On the web, advanced charts provide a number of technical analysis tools, such as candlestick charts, custom intervals, and technical indicators.

Note

To access advanced charts on the web

  1. Search for a stock or ETF symbol, a crypto coin, or a futures contract
  2. Within the chart, select Advanced

Settings

You can customize the chart to your preferences.

  • To switch the chart type, select the Chart icon, and then select Line or Candlesticks
  • To switch the hours shown, select Settings (gear icon), and then switch Show extended hours to the On or Off position

Time spans and intervals

Indicators are calculated over a period of time, which are defined by the number of intervals. The length of an interval depends on the time span shown in the chart. You can select different time spans ranging from 1 day to MAX for stocks and ETFs, and 1 hour to 5 years for crypto. Each time span plots a different time interval. Interval lengths depend on the selected time span, the chart view, and the asset type you’re viewing it for.

Note

With the 24-hour charts, the 1-day (1D) and 1-week (1W) charts show price movements during regular market, extended, and overnight hours, from 12 AM-12 AM ET (24 hours), Monday-Friday. For details, check out Robinhood 24 Hour Market.

The following lists the default time intervals for the available time spans for stocks, ETFs, and crypto.

For stocks and ETFs

  • 1D (1-day) chart, 1 interval can be 5 or 10 minutes depending on the chart type and if shown in the app or on the web
  • 1W (1-week) chart, 1 interval can be 10 or 30 minutes depending on the chart type and if shown in the app or on the web
  • 1M (1-month) chart, 1 interval is 1 hour
  • 3M (3-month) chart, 1 interval is 1 day
  • YTD (year to date) chart, 1 interval can be 1 hour or 1 day depending on the number of months shown in the chart
  • 1Y (1-year) chart, 1 interval is 1 day
  • 5Y (5-years) chart, 1 interval is 1 week
  • MAX (year 2000 or later) chart, 1 interval can be 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month depending on the amount of history shown in the chart

For crypto

  • 1H (1-hour) chart, 1 interval is 15 seconds
  • 1D (1-day) chart, 1 interval is 10 minutes
  • 1W (1-week), 1 interval is 1 hour for crypto
  • 1M (1-month) chart, 1 interval is 1 day
  • 3M (3-month) chart, 1 interval is 1 day
  • 1Y (1-year) chart, 1 interval is 1 week
  • 5Y (5-years) chart, 1 interval is 1 month

Custom intervals

You also customize the time interval you want to view for a specific time span in an advanced chart. Select the time span whose interval you want to change in the chart, and then select your preferred time interval.

Technical indicators

To see all available technical indicators, you need to open the Advanced chart view (2-arrow or expand icon). There you can add, remove, and customize indicators. We’ll save your preferences and apply them to the advanced charts for other stocks. For more details about which technical indicators are supported for stocks and ETFs and crypto on the web and for crypto in the app, check out Technical indicators.
