Open an account

To get started, use the following steps to open a self-directed, taxable, individual investing account. After opening an account, you can then open a joint investing account, an IRA, a revocable trust account, a managed account, and up to 9 more self-directed, individual investing accounts with us (for details, check out Multiple investing accounts).

Open an individual account

  1. Submit an application in your Robinhood app
  2. Within 1-2 weeks, you’ll receive an email either confirming your application’s been approved, or asking for a bit more information
  3. If we request a document to verify your identity, we’ll include instructions for uploading your documents securely

Application review takes 1–2 weeks. Check your email regularly and make sure you've completed any outstanding document upload requests, so we can complete our review. We'll let you know if your application is approved or if we need anything else.

Note

After submitting an application, you can queue a deposit before your account is approved. When this happens, we'll wait until your account is officially approved before initiating the queued deposit from your bank account into your Robinhood account. If your application is rejected, the queued deposit will be canceled within 3 business days.

Open a joint account

Robinhood offers a joint investing account where you can invest together in a shared account where both co-owners have equal ownership. We also offer a Joint Accounts with Rights of Survivorship type of account where 2 co-owners have the same rights and access to make trades and manage investments in the account.

Note
  • We only support joint accounts with 2 co-owners.
  • You can't open or maintain a joint account if either owner is a resident of Louisiana.

Get started

  1. Both owners need to have an active individual investing account with us that’s in good standing before applying for a joint account. If one or both of you don’t, complete these steps to open a new individual investing account first.
  2. One of the co-owners will start the process while logged into their account in the app. Within the app, select AccountAdd accountJoint investing, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete an application.
  3. When one of you starts the process, your co-owner will receive an invitation to complete their part of the application by text message or email. Invitations expire after 30 days. If your co-owner doesn't complete their part in time, we'll automatically reject the application and you'll need to start a new one.
  4. After you both submit the application, you’ll both get an email that either confirms your application is approved, or if needed we may ask for a bit more information.

For more details on the documents required during the sign-up process, including specific criteria, refer to How to send in documents.

Note

If we request a document to verify your identity, we’ll include instructions for uploading your documents securely.

Keep in mind

Application review takes 1–2 weeks. Look for an email from us with instructions on getting started.

Open an IRA

Individual retirement accounts (IRA) allow you to invest for retirement. Robinhood offers 2 different types of retirement accounts: traditional IRA and Roth IRA. You can open 1 of each type of IRA at Robinhood, even if you already have an IRA at another financial institution or a workplace retirement plan, like a 401(k).

For more details about your options and to set up an IRA, check out IRA overview and Transfers and rollovers.

Open a managed account

If you already have an individual account with Robinhood Financial with no restrictions, you can open 1 of each supported type of Robinhood Strategies managed account, including an individual account, a traditional IRA, or a Roth IRA. Managed joint accounts are coming soon.

About Robinhood Strategies has more details on how to sign up.

Open a revocable trust account

A revocable trust account lets a trust hold and invest brokerage assets on Robinhood, with one or more trustees able to fund, trade, and manage the account.

Before you begin
  • You need an active individual investing account with Robinhood in good standing. The primary grantor—the person whose Social Security number (SSN) or the trust's Employer Identification Number (EIN) is used for the trust—must be the one who starts onboarding.
  • Corporate or institutional trustees aren't supported.
  • Up to 5 total trustees (including the primary grantor) can be added to a trust account.

Get started

  1. From the app, go to AccountAdd account, or select Open a Robinhood account from the Accounts tab, and choose Trust account.
  2. Upload your trust documents (for example, your Certificate of Trust, an abstract of trust, or the relevant pages of your trust agreement). We'll scan these to pre-fill your Trust's information and you'll be asked to verify or correct anything we couldn't read automatically.
  3. Confirm your trust's details (trust name, execution date, state, etc.) and provide tax information (either the primary grantor's SSN or the Trust's EIN).
  4. Add and verify your trustees. We'll try to identify trustees from your uploaded documents, but you can add or correct them manually. Each trustee will need to provide personal information so we can verify their identity.
  5. Review and sign the trust attestation confirming that you and other trustees are authorized to act on behalf of the trust, then submit your application.
  6. Choose whether your first trust account will be self-directed or managed, and complete the application.

After you submit, we'll email your other trustees an invitation to create their own Robinhood account (if they don't already have one) and claim access to the trust account. Claiming access is optional for non-primary trustees, but any trustee who does so gets the same permissions to trade, fund, and manage the account.

Keep in mind
  • A trust account can be self-directed or managed by Robinhood Strategies, but it can't be a retirement, custodial, or joint account.
  • Applications may go through manual review in addition to standard verification, so a trust account application may take longer to process than an individual account application.
  • Once your first trust account is open, you can open additional accounts under the same trust later.

Open a custodial account

A custodial account is an investment account opened and managed by an adult (the custodian) for a minor (the beneficiary). If you already have an individual account with Robinhood, you can open up to 10 custodial accounts. Review Custodial accounts for more details.

Personal information

Robinhood requests personal information, including financial and tax identification information, in order to comply with US government laws and FINRA rules. We’ll request personal information from both new customers and long-standing customers. Robinhood complies with an SEC customer identification rule of the USA Patriot Act of 2001. This rule requires Robinhood to verify the identity of any person seeking to open an account and to maintain records of their information. Robinhood must also determine whether a customer appears on any lists of terrorist organizations provided to broker-dealers by any government agency. We take the security of all data we collect very seriously. We don’t intend to use this data for anything other than the fulfillment of our regulatory requirements. Check out our data protection policies for more information.
