Close my account | Robinhood

Close my account

You can close your Robinhood joint and individual investing accounts in the app or on web classic.

Alternatively, you can transfer your individual, joint investing or IRA account to an outside brokerage company.

After you close or transfer your account, you can continue to view your account records.

Note

If you deactivate a joint account, you cannot reactivate it. All other accounts can be reactivated. Coming back to Robinhood has details.

Close an individual account

To close your individual investing account:

  1. Close all your positions and confirm you:
  • Have no pending deposits
  • Have no upcoming dividends, cash sweep payments, or Stock Lending payments (must wait until these are paid before you can close your account)
  • Are no longer enrolled in the Stock Lending or Brokerage cash sweep programs
  • Have no skipped or outstanding round-up orders
  1. Select Account (person icon) → in the app, Menu (3 bars)
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Deactivate Account
  4. Select the account you’d like to close
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to close out anything outstanding
  6. Confirm you have a $0 balance, and then confirm the deactivation request
Keep in mind

If you deactivate an individual account while you’re a co-owner on an active joint investing account, you may lose access to features in your joint account, such as Robinhood Gold, Stock lending, linking new bank accounts or debit cards, or Brokerage cash sweep program features.

Close a joint account

If you want to close your joint investing account:

  1. Confirm you have:
  • No open positions
  • No pending deposits
  • No upcoming dividends, cash sweep payments, or Stock Lending payments (must wait until these are paid before you can close your account)
  • Not enrolled in the Stock Lending program
  1. Select Account (person icon) → in the app, Menu (3 bars)
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Deactivate Account
  4. Select the account you’d like to close
  5. In the Text box (optional) share any information you want us to know, such as feedback on why you're closing your account
  6. Select Send to create a support ticket
  7. You’ll receive an email from us within 5-7 days to confirm your account closure or if necessary, further steps to do.

Close an IRA

If you want to close your Robinhood IRA:

  1. Confirm you have:
  • No open positions
  • No pending deposits
  • No upcoming dividends, cash sweep payments, or Stock Lending payments (must wait until these are paid before you can close your account)
  • Not enrolled in the Stock Lending program
  1. Close all your positions and withdraw your outstanding balance*
  2. Confirm you have a $0 account balance, and then contact us to complete the closure
Note

*Unless you intend to take a reportable distribution from your IRA, be sure to transfer the assets directly to another custodian to avoid possible taxes and penalties.

Transfer your account

Instead of closing your account positions, you can request to transfer your Robinhood IRA (ACATS transfer only), individual investing, and joint investing accounts to another brokerage company:

  1. Choose where you’d like to transfer your account
  2. Submit a request to your new brokerage to have your assets transferred out of Robinhood. If you transfer all of your assets out, we’ll automatically close your Robinhood account for you.

If you need help, contact us.

Finding your account records

After your Robinhood account is closed, you’ll still be able to retrieve your account statements, tax documents, and trade confirmations in the app. Downloading the Robinhood app again won’t reactivate your account.

Regulations require us to preserve certain books and records. We take the security of all collected data extremely seriously, and we don’t intend to use this data for anything beyond the fulfillment of our regulatory requirements.
