Options trading hours
Most equity and ETF option contracts trade Monday–Friday (excluding holidays), 9:30 AM–4 PM ET (or 1 PM ET for half-days), when the market session closes for the day.
However, there are some underlying assets you can trade options on until 4:15 PM ET (these assets are determined by options exchanges). Assets eligible for late close options trading (4:15 PM ET) are typically exchange-traded products that track major market indices like the S&P 500 (SPY).
Index options also trade until 4:15 PM ET and some index options trading only on SPX, VIX, XSP, and RUT can now be traded until 5 PM ET. Because we’ll likely add more indexes in the future, you can check this app link for what can currently be traded during extended hours. Review Trading hours for details.
For stock and ETF options, if you have expiration date trading enabled, you’ll have until 3:30 PM ET to open positions in same-day expiring contracts. We'll attempt to close out any expiring, at-risk positions starting at 3:30 PM ET (3:45 PM ET for late-close options). This standard closeout process doesn’t apply for index options.
